Tattoos: Tattooing
built 646 days ago
Butterfly tattoos represent freedom, beauty and the fragile nature of life. But that's not all. These beautiful designs are full of intricate detail and many vibrant colors. And due to the huge number of species that exist, you're virtually guaranteed a butterfly tattoo that's completely unique.
The numbered tattoos that have today become an identifying mark of Holocaust survivors originated in Auschwitz, the largest Nazi concentration camp in Europe. There, incoming prisoners went through the infamous selektion (selection process). An SS officer would sort the prisoners into two lines: those sent to the right were immediately killed in the gas chambers, those sent to the left were put to work in the forced labor camps. After their heads were shaved and their personal possessions removed, the prisoners were officially registered. Beginning in 1941, this registration consisted of a tattoo, which was placed on the left breast of the prisoner; later, the tattoo location was moved to the inner forearm. It was not only Jews who were marked: all prisoners other than ethnic Germans and police prisoners were tattooed.
For that group, "Tattoos were a sign of their individualism and their being rebels," he says. "As it becomes more mainstream, that (individuality) is taken away — and they resent marketers for it."

The history of tattoos is as old as the pre-historic times. Since Neolithic times, tattoos have come in to existence as a Eurasian practice. Several tattooed mummies from the end of the 2nd millennium are ... found by the historians. Though according to some other foundings, the practice of tattooing is as old as 300 BC.
