Tarja Halonen will officially start her second mandate on 1st March next. In the second half of 2006 she will, along with Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (KESK), ensure the Presidency of the European Union.

In 1980–1981 Tarja Halonen served as the chairman of SETA (Seksuaalinen Tasavertaisuus RY, Sexual Equality), the main LGBT rights organization in Finland. When she became Minister for Justice in 1990, there were high hopes among SETA members that she would stand up for gay rights.[4]

Rather vividly Halonen showed her worth as a foreign minister. Especially in the second half year when Finland presided at EU. It was s period of constant trips (including Ingushetia in order to become familiar with the position of the migrants form Chechnya), and it can be said that a burden of responsibility for all Europe was placed on her.
