Tarja Halonen: Campaign
built 645 days ago
On May 20, 2005, Tarja Halonen held a press conference in Mäntyniemi where she announced her willingness to run for a second term. Officially, this was the desired answer for the SDP delegation that had visited her two days earlier. In addition to her own party's support, the leader of the Left Alliance, Suvi-Anne Siimes, gave her support for Halonen's future campaign.

Tarja Halonen does not wont' too much about her appearance even though she did manage to clean up her act during the last days of the campaign. She does not like comments about her looks, as this is done only when women are involved. She is straight forward and a no-nonsense kind of person.

Halonen's wedding proved to be one of the few concessions to her new job that she was willing to make. On the whole, she conducted herself as she always had. Her stance on campaign issues such as the Nordic welfare society, human rights, and the environment remained unchanged. Indeed, she had been largely consistent about her causes for most of her career. Nor did her personal style alter. Salty language, impatience with ostentation, and a singular fashion sense were still hallmarks.

The campaign began very negatively for Halonen. Party veterans did not have faith in their candidate and for the longest time she was third in all opinion polls. It was only a few days before the first ballot that Halonen started edging closer to the clear favourite Esko Aho.
