Hassidism in Nowy-Targ - always a Hassidic town - reached its zenith during the period between the two wars. Its allegiance was to the House of Bobov. A scion of this dynasty, R. Hershl Meisels, and his wife settled in Nowy-Targ, established a Bobov shtibl, with a yeshiva attached. His zeal and fervor attracted old and young, as did his unusually melodious voice.

The conflagration which destroyed the town in the Swedish invasion ... annihilated the town records, and little is known about the first settlement of Jews in Nowy-Targ. Dr. Yitzhak Schiper (Economic History of the Jews in Poland During the Middle Ages, Warsaw, 1926) sets the date as 1332. The Jews at that time engaged in trade and money-lending.
