Many factors entered into making Nowy-Targ the bustling town that it was, in the half-century before the Second World War. It was the county seat, the site of the District Court, the District Hospital and other governmental agencies and institutions. The Dunaietz River coursed right through it. Nowy-Targ (named Neumark by the Austrians) was on the Crakow-Zakopane railway line, which ran clear to the Czech border. It was surrounded by vacation resorts, open summer and winter.

Nowy Targ is a city in southern Poland, situated south of Kraków near the Tatra Mountains. The city is in the Beskids and this part of the mountain range named Zywiec Beskid. There is ... a big lake near town.

Like many other communities in the region, Nowy-Targ had no special schools for the Jewish children. However, Jewish studies formed part of the curriculum of the public school, and these were taught by Jewish teachers. The first high school was built in 1904; until then, well-to-do parents had to send their sons to high schools
