Tara Maclay: Seasons
built 634 days ago
Tara is introduced in the Season Four episode "Hush." A member of UC Sunnydale's Wicca group, she meets Willow Rosenberg, herself a practicing witch. In many ways, the painfully shy and quiet Tara is reminiscent of Willow of seasons past. As Willow's romantic relationship with Oz caused her to bloom, it is through Tara that Willow becomes a powerful young woman, and through Willow that Tara's confidence grows. As the season progresses, it becomes increasingly clear that the pair are destined for a romantic liaison. Willow realizes that Tara is the person she loves, choosing Tara over her ex-boyfriend Oz. The two ... became one of the few lesbian couples on television and the first-ever prime-time lesbian couple which included a starring character.
Christopher Golden is back, and he's brought Tara Maclay with him. The award-winning author will see the release of his newest Buffy novel, DARK CONGRESS, this August. And this book is not without controversy, stemming from the recent revelation that Tara (shot to death in the sixth season of BtVS) will return to life...at least temporarily...in the course of the story.

In the season five episode "Family," Tara casts a spell to stop the Scooby Gang from being able to see demons so she can hide her supposed demon side. This spell almost gets the entire gang killed but Tara reverses it in time. Tara is ... seen casting more offensive spells in combat situations.
Once Willow realizes she "has a problem," she spends the last half of the season struggling to stay clean and win Tara back. Here, Buffy came close to saving itself from its own internal logic of lesbianism as pathology through the possibility of Willow and Tara's reunion. All Willow's struggles (and the show's) were in vain... as the girls' rekindled love is brutally truncated in Tara's senseless and untimely murder.

Maclay, the cliché does not fit. Tara was not a villain. In fact, she was so morally upstanding and sweet that she was almost a cardboard cutout of goodness and light. not cannon fodder. She appeared on the show for two and a half seasons before being killed. Her death was not gruesome nor was it meaningless.
