The argument gains strength given the juxtaposition of Tara and Willow’s make-up shagging with the death straight afterwards. Buffy has always portrayed sex and death as being metaphors for one another: the ‘siring’ of a new vampire has always carried strong sexual overtones, and when Buffy herself lost her virginity to Angel (a vampire whose soul had been returned to him) he reverted to the ultra-evil serial killer he had been in centuries past. But in a series where death is generally no hindrance to continued appearance in the series, redemption has generally always been on offer — at least, as long as you’re straight.

BUFFY: ...renegade Slayer Faith, has left Will and Tara feeling both confused and in doubt of the sanity of those around them. A feeling which grew as the other guests departed, and they were shown to their separate rooms.

Before Tara quite knew what had happened, Janeway was across the room and sitting straddling her thighs. She had her hands tangled in the hair on the back of Tara's head, and she was kissing her as if it was going to be outlawed. Tara paid back in kind, as well as she could from her position. Her hands were roving over Janeway's back, and her tongue was quite busy playing with the older woman's. She tasted, unsurprisingly, of chocolate chip ice cream.

Mr Jarndyce stared back at her, wondering vaguely why he'd never heard that the Maclay girl had a English aunt who seemed to have wandered in out of an episode of Masterpiece Theater. And what that funny purplish thing she was wearing was called. He shook his head, dismissing that as irrelevant. “You have to be twenty-four to be considered independent,” he explained.

Tara bit her lip. Her eyes were stinging, her self-loathing producing hot tears that threatened to betray her deception to the gently frowning girl before her who had come to mean so much to her in such a short span of time. From the disappointing meetings at the interminably dull and pretentious Wicca group, to the terrifying hours just a few nights ago huddled together in the laundry room, hiding from the Gentlemen and their lackeys—episodes that were bearable because they had happened in the company of the quirky redhead.
