Tantric Buddhism shares another factor with many schools of Mahayana Buddhism. It claims that the existence of the physical world is illusory, and therefore there is no difference between samsara (the world of transmigration and shifting appearances) and nirvana.

At first glance the sexual roles seem to have changed completely in Tantric Buddhism (Vajrayana). The contempt for the world of the senses and degradation of women in Hinayana, the asexuality and compassion for women in Mahayana, appear to have been turned into their opposites here. It all but amounts to an explosion of sexuality, and the idea that sexual love harbors the secret of the universe becomes a spectacular dogma. The erotic encounter between man and woman is granted a mystical aura, an authority and power completely denied it in the preceding Buddhist eras.

According to Tantric Buddhism, female energy represents perfect wisdom. Every woman is a diety. As Craig Hamilton writes, "for the serious male tantric practitioner, women are to be worshipped, honored and revered as the bringers of enlightened energy into the world" (WIE, p. 39). Although both men and women recognize one another's divinity, the man is expected to respond to the woman as a goddess with numerous expressions of devotion.
