A third broad tradition, variously called Vajrayana (Diamond Vehicle), Mantrayana (Vehicle of the Mantra), or Tantric Buddhism, offers a quicker, more demanding way to achieve nirvana. Because of its level of challenge—enabling one to reach enlightenment in one lifetime—it requires the guidance of a spiritual leader. It is most prominent in Tibet and Mongolia.

The Fourth Stage: In the past three decades, Professor Lin Yun has successfully introduced Black Sect Tantric Buddhism to the West. By incorporating modern western knowledge of medicine, physiology, psychology, architecture, ecology, the study of colors, social sciences, along with theories established by Professor Lin-Yun himself, such as the Theory of Ch'i, the Theory of Ling Particles, and the Theory of Multi-Causes of Karmic Generation, etc., Professor Lin-Yun has been able to clarify and expand the ancient Buddhist teachings, Chinese philosophies, and folkloric cultures to the West. This is the current fourth stage of Black Sect Tantric Buddhism.

The practice of Tantric sex is more ancient than Buddhism. The idea goes back to the ancient Hindus who believed that the retention of semen during intercourse increased sexual pleasure and made men live longer. The Tibetan Buddhists developed the belief that enlightenment could be accelerated by the decision "to enlist the passions in one`s religious practice, rather than to avoid them". The stategy is considered extremely risky yet so efficacious that it could lead to enligthenment in one lifetime.

Secrecy is an important cornerstone of tantric Buddhism, simply to avoid the practices from harming oneself and others without proper guidance. One should realise that it is not even allowed to explain the full symbolism and psychology of the practice to the un-initiated, so obviously, this leads to misunderstanding and dismissal. Tantric techniques may initially appear to consist of ritualistic nonsense; ... it should only be practiced on the basis of a thorough understanding of Buddhist philosophy and strictly following the traditions.

An offshoot of Tantra is Tantric Buddhism known as Vajrayana or the Vehicle of the Thunderbolt. The vajra is a double-headed ritual tool, used with a bell. Held in the right hand, it represents the masculine, skillful means, and compassion. The bell in the left hand represents the feminine, wisdom, emptiness, and nirvana.
