The Tamil Tigers are a baseball team from Tamil Eelam, Sri Lanka. Currently, the government of Sri Lanka does not like them very much. This is possibly because the St. Louis Cardinals won the 2006 World Series (eat it, Stewart!) and the Tamil Tigers did not. The Tigers ... lost in 1958 to their big rivals, the Black Panthers. In fact, the Tamil Tigers have never won the World Series, and they probably never will.

Currently, the official talks are suspended although both parties; the government and the Tamil Tigers are still working together. Mr. Anton Balasingham had arrived in Vanni, and the government had facilitated his journey from here to his home land. Government delegations had returned from India with the Norwegians and Mr. Akashi where they had discussions with the Indian government representatives. Tamil Tigers who had suspended all their official meetings still went ahead and met the Muslim leaders in the East. All these indicate that the current peace process is still very much alive.

In July 2004 Tamil Tigers threatened to resume a civil war halted by a peace process that began two-and-one-half-years ago. The Tigers accuse the Sri Lankan military of trying to weaken the rebel movement by using the rival rebel faction against them. The army and the government deny the charges, saying they are abiding by a ceasefire agreement signed in 2002. Several Tamil Tiger cadres had been killed in the east recently, and a suicide-bomb attack ripped Colombo, killing four policemen.

The Tamil Tigers launched a ground and air assault on an air force base in northern Sri Lanka early Monday, military officials said, in one of the most brazen rebel attacks on a military target here in months. The attack on the Anuradhapura air base wounded eight airmen and damaged two helicopters on the ground, the military said. However, officials in the local morgue reported that the bodies of at least two airmen were brought there after the attack. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

The Tamil Tigers are best known for their suicide bombings, which are carried out by elite squads called Black Tigers. They have committed about 200 attacks so far. Tamil members wear a "vest" filled with explosives to attack, a tactic that has been adopted by Hezbolla and Hamas, among other groups.
