Tamil Art Tamil is written horizontally from left to right and its basic set of symbols consists of 18 consonants and 12 vowels. In contrast to many other Indic scripts, Tamil uses a reduced inventory of consonants to reflect its phonology. For example, there are no symbols for aspirated consonants since these sounds do not occur in Tamil. Tamil is written with a syllabic alphabet in which all consonants have an inherent vowel. Diacritics, which can appear above, below, before or after the consonant, indicate change to another vowel or suppression of the inherent vowel. European punctuation is used.

It was a renaissance which had its cultural beginnings in the discovery and the subsequent editing and printing of the Tamil classics of the Sangam period. These had existed earlier only as palm leaf manuscripts. Arumuga Navalar in Jaffna, in the island of Sri Lanka, published the Thirukural in 1860 and Thirukovaiyar in 1861. Thamotherampillai, who was born in Jaffna but who served in Madras, published the grammatical treatise Tolkapiyam by collating material from several original ola leaf manuscripts.

Pongal, a harvest festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Thai (mid-January), is an important festival for Tamilian Hindus. It is celebrated over three days. On the first day, Bogi Pongal, discarded household items (brooms, mats, etc.) are burnt before sunrise and delicacies are offered to the Gods. Cows are washed, their horns are painted, and they are taken to a nearby temple.
