According to the Health Ministry, 54 people have died so far after taking Tamiflu, and in February, a 14-year-old girl and a boy fell to their deaths from their apartment homes in separate incidents after taking the drug. Neither had left a suicide note.

Tamiflu can prevent the flu as long as you continue taking this medication, but getting a yearly flu shot is still the best way of avoiding the disease entirely. For older adults, those in high-risk situations such as health-care work, and people with an immune deficiency or respiratory disease, vaccination remains a must.

Roche Canada has resumed sales of its sought-after flu drug Tamiflu to regular pharmacies in Canada. But a company official says efforts are being made to keep Canadian supplies from flowing to Internet pharmacies. Some of those Internet outlets have been taking advantage of pandemic fears by selling the scarce drug at huge mark-ups. That discrepancy is why Roche stopped distributing to pharmacies in Canada, the U.S. and a number of other countries last October. Limits will be placed on how much of the drug individual pharmacies can order at a time, according to the Canadian subsidiary of Swiss drug giant Hoffman-La Roche. The surge in global awareness of concern about the pandemic potential of the H5N1 avian flu sent sales of the drug through the roof.

The team calculated that the most vulnerable catchment in the United States is the Lower Colorado, where they predicted OC concentrations high enough to promote Tamiflu resistance in the virus for up to eight weeks. The most vulnerable British catchment would be the Lee catchment in northeast London. Resistant strains could proliferate within a week after pandemic starts in a region, assuming all patients start taking Tamiflu as soon as they develop symptoms. Health officials have been sensitive about taking any action that might dissuade people from taking Tamiflu, since the drug could play an important role in an outbreak of bird flu. The drug doesn’t prevent flu but can reduce the length and severity of its symptoms.
