Tamiflu: Spreading
built 607 days ago
Tamiflu is a prescription medication so you must complete a consultation form before you can make a purchase. Consultations are entirely free and you are under no obligation to make a purchase.
The above translation indicates a Tamiflu blanket is being applied in the Gharbiya governorate in the Nile Delta. H5N1 was confirmed there for the first time this season. Last December the Gharbiya cluster was reported. It is the largest cluster reported to date in Egypt, and the sequence from the fatal infections had two receptor binding domain changes, V223I and M230I, and was Tamiflu resistant, N294S.
Roche, the Swiss pharmaceutical, has sold stockpiles of its Tamiflu to 40 countries and insists it's effective if administered within 48 hours of infection. Roche recently licensed Indonesia to manufacture Tamiflu for its own population.

Tamiflu was approved by U.S. federal regulators in 1999 but the focus has been on creating new vaccines instead of creating stockpiles of Tamiflu in preparation for a coming epidemic. "Massive international collaboration is now needed on the advance preparation of global antiviral stockpiles and pandemic vaccine development," Dr. Lee advised.
"Albemarle is very pleased to be part of the supply chain network Roche has assembled to produce Tamiflu," said Ed Tatum, global business director for Albemarle's Fine Chemistry Services unit. "The need to respond to the growing demand for Tamiflu is one of the most important challenges facing the life sciences industry today. We believe that our selection by Roche for this cGMP manufacturing opportunity is further validation of Albemarle's Fine Chemistry Services capabilities, and we are striving to do our part to ensure that the public health needs for this important product are satisfied completely."

To make the matters worse, recently there was a big controversy relating to the manufacture of generic version of Tamiflu. Many companies approached Roche for the license to produce Tamiflu but Roche first flatly refused and later reluctantly agreed to grant licenses on case-to-case basis.
