Tamagotchi is the original virtual pet that started the whole concept of digital pets. The Tamagotchis first made their appearance in Japan November 1996, with the rest of the world to follow early 1997. The company behind Tamagotchi is Bandai, a big Japanese Toy company (... makers of Power Rangers). But Bandai did not invent the idea of a virtual pet. A Japanese woman Aki Maita, came up with the idea of a virtual pet and later sold the concept to Bandai Corporation. Aki Maita loved to keep pets, and the idea came about as she was looking for a pet she could bring everywhere.

At the beginning you choose one of three Tamagotchi partners, and then pick between two modes, Care, or Store. Store is where the game really takes place, and Care is where the game really should have taken place. With the new Tamagotchi series, owners still care for their virtual pets by feeding and training them as before. But now they can use an infrared function that allows their Tamagotchi to communicate with those of their friends and to exchange gifts, play games, and even become friends themselves. If two Tamagotchi of the opposite sex become friends, they may become boyfriend and girlfriend, and eventually they may even get married and have Tamagotchi children. The more Tamagotchi friends communicate, the firmer their friendship becomes, and this in turn leads to more communication and deeper friendship between their owners.
