[Y]ou're wondering what a Tamagotchi is. Well, a Tamagotchi is a toy manufactured by Bandai which first originated in Japan. Now, the Tamagotchi has hit the market in America and is being sold out in almost every store in America. There are three different versions of Tamagotchi. The three versions are American, German, and Japanese. They all have the same number of buttons and options. The differnce between the three versions is feeding and death.

Tamagotchi is a portable interactive virtual pet that needs parenting care in order to grow and develop: its upbringing ... determines the kind of character it will grow up to be. The new version’s most novel feature is its built-in infrared communications function. It can communicate with other people ’s Tamagotchis (this communication is to be known as Tamacom) making new friends, exchanging presents, and playing games. If a particular friendship goes far enough, the two Tamagotchis involved can even get married and produce a new generation.

This new version, called Tamagotchi Plus, has many more features, as well as an older version of the Tamagotchi. Since the pet is older it can date, marry, and even have children. This new functionality is made possible by the inclusion of an infrared port on each device allowing Tamagotchis to interact with one another.

The major controversy over Tamagotchi digital pets involves children taking them to school, mostly because certain Tamagotchi versions could starve in less than half an hour. Worry over potential ownership disputes, class disruptions, and general distraction from schoolwork has led many schools to ban the product. [1] (Later versions included a 'pause' feature.)

Bandai, the games and toy company behind the highly successful Tamagotchi, has decided to release a new version of the digital pet. The original Tamagotchi was released back in 1996 and sold like hot cakes (around 40 million worldwide) to kids and grown-ups alike. Consisting of a small, battery powered device with an LCD screen, the Tamagotchi was a small animal that the owner could give food and drink to and pet to stay entertained. Not paying attention to your pet meant that it eventually died and the LCD went blank.
