Further proof that Japanese airline JAL is run by 8 year-old children, the carrier will be rolling out three Tamagotchi jets for the month of August. With the Obon holidays, the month is prime vacation time, and the handheld pet sim is coming up on its tenth anniversary. Inside the plane, the headrest covers and paper cups depict the popular characters, and there's even an on-board Tamagotchi channel. Children get their requisite schwag as they damn well should.

Tamagotchi, the virtual-reality pet by Bandai that has quickly become a popular plaything and hot collectible since its 1996 debut in Japan. Available in the United States since the spring of 1997, Tamagotchi reportedly means "lovable egg" in Japanese.

It's not too surprising that Tamagotchi virtual pets spawned off a cartoon special. After all, everyone seemed to have one of the keychain toys during their hot period, and in the time before Pokemon and Furbies ruled the roost, a Tamagotchi was every kid's best friend.
