A good example of the importance of the host to the form a talk show takes would be The Tonight Show. The Tonight Show premiered on NBC in 1954 with Steve Allen as its first host. While it maintained a distinctive format and style throughout its first four decades on the air, The Tonight Show changed significantly with each successive host. Steve Allen, Ernie Kovacs, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, and Jay Leno each took The Tonight Show in a significant new direction. Each of these hosts imprinted the show with distinctive personalities and management styles.

The country will again see the increasingly familiar face of former Arkansas governor and former nobody Mike Huckabee on the Sunday morning talk shows today. He's hot because he won the Republican Iowa caucus last week. He'll be in another debate, the last before Tuesday's New Hampshire primary, later today on Fox News. And he and the four other invited GOP candidates -- Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson -- will, of course, discuss a variety of issues with Chris Wallace. (Fox decided to exclude Reps. Ron Paul of Texas, who beat Giuliani in Iowa and leads Thompson in New Hampshire polls, and Duncan Hunter of Alpine.)

Satirist Daniele Luttazzi brought Steve Allen's genre of talk show to Italy in 1998. His first was Barracuda on Mediaset, but he left the network because of censorship and started, on the public RAI in 2001, Satyricon, that became a "media case" and had great success and controversy.
