Taliban: United States
built 646 days ago
The Taliban recognized the need for international ties but wavered between cooperation—they claimed to have drastically cut opium production in July 2000—and defiance—they pointedly ignored international pleas not to destroy the 2000-year-old Buddhist statues of Bamian. However, they made no effort to curb terrorist activity within Afghanistan, a policy that ultimately led to their undoing.

According to the testimony of Guantanamo captives, before their Combatant Status Review Tribunals, the Taliban, in addition to conscripting men to serve as soldiers... conscripted literate and numerate men to staff its civil service. Ironically, given the derivation of their name for themselves, some of the Taliban leaders were illiterate.
Remember when the Taliban blew up those giant Buddhas in Afghanistan (only because the Neocons hadn’t thought of it first)? Those 1,700 year-old sandstone statues were in league with Danish cartoonists (just a theory, okay?) and were just asking to be obliterated so an all-powerful God would know He was really, really worshipped to the max by the faithful…no karma, no foul, right?
Despite the impending threat of US military action, the Taliban has refused to hand bin Laden over. In a statement issued on Thursday, Omar said bin Laden could not have orchestrated the attacks on the US.

[A]ny discussion of the Taliban dictatorship would be incomplete without mentioning who is most to blame for the plight of Afghanis subject to the Taliban yoke: none other than the United States. The Taliban, along with other mujahideen, received indispensable weapons, training and other wherewithal from the U.S. government in order to allow the Taliban to fight against, and ultimately kick out, Soviet forces which were occupying Afghanistan at the time.
In Europe and the United States, most recent interest in the Taliban has focused on the Taliban government and criticism thereof. Among other things, its human rights record and alleged connections to terrorism have made it less than extremely popular around the world.
