Taliban: Mullah Omar
built 633 days ago
The Taliban initially had enormous goodwill from Afghans weary of the corruption, brutality and incessant fighting of Mujahideen warlords. Two contrasting narratives of the beginnings of the Taliban[12] are that the rape and murder of boys and girls from a family traveling to Kandahar or a similar outrage by Mujahideen bandits sparked Mullah Omar and his students to vow to rid Afghanistan of these criminals.[13] The other is that the Pakistan-based truck shipping mafia known as the "Afghanistan Transit Trade" and their allies in the Pakistan government, trained, armed and financed the Taliban to clear the southern road across Afghanistan to the Central Asian Republics of extortionate bandit gangs.[14]

Afghan officials report that a U.S. airstrike that killed 130 Taliban ... left 21 civilians dead. A few days later, when the estimate grows to 42 civilians, angry protestors sack and burn buildings and Karzai warns that the Afghan people will not tolerate a foreign military presence much longer. A key Taliban operational commander with ties to Al Qaeda, Mullah Dadullah, is killed by Afghan, American, and NATO forces. Following his death, the victim’s brother, Haji Mansour Dadullah, also a Taliban leader, claims to receive a letter of condolence from Osama bin Laden, urging him to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Mullah Mohammed Omar is the religious leader of the Taliban and has the titles of ‘Commander in Chief’ and Amirul Momineen (‘Commander of the Faithful’). He reportedly acquired the title of Amirul Momineen upon wrapping himself in a cloak that is claimed to have originally belonged to Prophet Mohammed, in an attempt to legitimize his role. And ... to raise the morale of the Taliban cadres, as they were facing their initial defeats from what is now the Northern Alliance opposition. Initially, Mullah Omar ruled by a Jirga or Shura (committee) where the people would voice their opinion and he would make a final decision. Mullah Omar now arrives at decisions in increasing isolation, with a few trustworthy mullahs.
