Takuma Sato

Takuma Sato is out of the Malaysian Grand Prix. He will be replaced by Anthony Davidson. The Japanese driver is suffering from a fever and was judged not to be fit enough to continue. Davidson will ... be given his first chance to race in F1 since he subbed for Alex Yoong at Minardi in two races in the summer of 2002. He did a solid job but not enough to attract attention and remained as BAR test driver ever since. His performances attracted the attention of Williams but contractual problems meant that he could not take up the offer of a test with Williams at the end of 2004.

Takuma Sato is the only Japanese driver now racing in Formula 1. He started at the Jordan team in 2002 after racing in the lower series in Europe. He was hired to race at the BAR-Honda team in 2003. There he scored points, and the highest qualifying position by a Japanese driver in Formula 1. The Super Aguri team was founded around him in 2006 and he began scoring points at the team in 2007.

Takuma Sato in the other BAR-Honda ... had a memorable race, but for other reasons. Starting seventh, he made a blistering start, passing three cars then going into the first corner three abreast to tuck into fourth place behind Button. But his engine was already smoking and when it eventually expired a few laps later there was a huge cloud of smoke in which a number of sightless drivers had a series of accidents, including Giancarlo Fisichella who flipped upside down over the barriers. Fortunately he was unhurt.

* Lap 1: At the start Michael Schumacher gets away well and Jarno Trulli is with him, seemingly leaving Takuma Sato behind, but the Japanese driver makes a huge lunge under braking and emerges in second place. As the cars head down the hill Sato and Trulli kick up the dust and as a result Kimi Raikkonen, fourth at the first corner, finds himself in second place with Fernando Alonso and Sato chasing. At the first corner Juan Pablo Montoya locks up and moves to the left to avoid running into Rubens Barrichello. As a result he tips his Williams team-mate into a spin and the German loses his front wing. He slides off the track into the path of Cristiano da Matta’s Toyota and the two cars make contact and both retire. At the end of the lap Montoya has to stop for repairs.

After Graduating from SRS-F (Suzuka Racing School Formula), Takuma Sato won a scholarship in 1997. He soon moved to the U.K. to participate in European races and in 2001 became test driver at the team formerly known as B·A·R Honda (now Honda Racing F1 Team). During this time, Takuma won the British F3 Championship, the Marlboro Masters F3 race and the Macau F3 Grand Prix making him the first driver to ever win this F3 “Grandslam”.

It was Takuma Sato who led the BAR-Honda lineup at the Spanish Grand Prix. After a superb qualifying lap which saw him start third on the grid (the highest ever for a Japanese driver), Sato finished fifth behind the two Ferraris and the two Renaults.
