Taiwan's president has renewed its bid to join the United Nations, sending two more letters to leaders of the world body. A spokesman for President Chen Shui-bian says letters were delivered Wednesday, to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and to China's U.N. representative.

In mid-September, half a million people marched for Taiwan’s UN membership in Taiwan when the world body held its annual meeting in New York City. A referendum on UN membership, the first in the history of Taiwan, is scheduled to be held next March, in conjunction with Taiwan's presidential election.
