For some, Taiwan's present autonomy and self-determination are a humiliating reminder of Qing Dynasty ineptness -- its capitulation to Japanese imperialism in 1895. Yet what some describe as China's coerced acquiescence in an "unequal treaty" with Japan that year is proof for others that China simply cared too little about Taiwan when it mattered.

Imperial Japan had sought to control Taiwan since 1592, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi began extending Japanese influence overseas. In 1609, the Tokugawa Shogunate sent Arima Harunobu on an exploratory mission. In 1616, Murayama Toan led an unsuccessful invasion of the island.

During its 50 years (1895-1945) of rule, Japan expended considerable effort in developing Taiwan's economy. At the same time, Japanese rule led to the "Japanization" of the island, including compulsory Japanese education and forcing residents of Taiwan to adopt Japanese names.
