Taiwan: Countries
built 627 days ago
By blocking Taiwan's entry to the UN, China is ignoring the same right to self-determination it proclaimed in its more revolutionary days of anti-colonial struggle. This hypocrisy explains in part why the nagging consciences of the non-aligned at the UN impel them to ensure that the admission of Taiwan is not even on the agenda for discussion, despite clear rules to the contrary. In any debate they would have to acknowledge that Beijing's obdurate stand contravenes not only of the right to self-determination but ... of the inviolability of colonial boundaries that most African countries accept.

Taiwan has rapidly become a significant player in broadband Internet access. The government has been especially busy promoting the benefits of broadband and has committed the country to being on a par with the US by 2010. By September 2003, Taiwan was ranked fourth in the world in terms of broadband penetration with 13%, up from 4% just two years earlier. By mid-2005, the penetration had been lifted to around 17%. At end-2004, the IDC Information Society Index (ISI) rated Taiwan as having the world’s best wireless Internet penetration. This report looks at the broadband side of the Internet revolution that has taken place in Taiwan, as well some information on the data market.
The Geert Hofstede analysis for Taiwan is almost identical to the model for China. Long-term Orientation is the highest-ranking factor. As with other Asian countries, relationships are a primary part of the culture. Individualism is the lowest ranking. Like the Chinese, the Taiwanese are a collectivist society. More Details

Anti-Taiwan independence protesters in Washington, D.C. wait for Lee Teng-Hui to come out of a hotel. Lee views Taiwan as already an independent state, and that the call for "Taiwanese independence" could even confuse the international community by implying that Taiwan once viewed itself as part of China. Taiwan is independent, even if it remains unable to enter the UN. Lee said the most important goals are to improve the people's livelihoods, build national consciousness, make a formal name change and draft a new constitution that reflects the present reality so that Taiwan can officially identify itself as country.[11]
Taiwan joined the World Trade Organization in Jan. 2002, just one day after China gained entry. In August President Chen outraged China when he asserted that Taiwan and China are separate countries and that a referendum on independence for Taiwan is a “basic human right.”
