Tachometer

Tachometer generators and tachogenerators are small AC or DC generators that output a voltage in proportion to the rotational speed of a shaft. They are capable of measuring speed and direction of rotation, but not position. They convert a rotational speed into an isolated analog voltage signal that is suitable for remote indication and control applications. Tachometer generators and tachogenerators are ... used in servo systems to supply velocity or damping signals and may be mounted on or in the same housing as a servo motor. There are two basic types of tachometer generators and tachogenerators: alternating current (AC) generators and direct current (DC) generators. Both types of products develop an output voltage that is proportional to the rotational speed. In the case of DC generators, the phase or polarity depends upon the direction of rotation.
Tachometer is an instrument that measures the speed at which an engine shaft is rotating. The reading is usually in terms of revolutions per minute. A motorcycle tachometer is similar with a speedometer in many ways, like construction and operation.

Tachometer generators and tachogenerators are available with a variety of features. Explosion proof or intrinsically safe (IS) devices do not produce sparks or thermal effects under conditions that would ignite a specified gas mixture. Weather proof generators are designed to prevent the ingress of moisture or dirt and handle variations in temperature. Some tachometer generators and tachogenerators are built to U.S. military specifications (MIL-SPEC). Others include an auxiliary encoder that is attached to the same axle as the tachometer generator or tachogenerator.
To access the Tachometer, go to the "auxiliary functions" built into each MicroSet (hold down the BEGIN button when you turn it on). The auxiliary functions in your timer depend on what options you may have bought and when your timer was made. To cycle through the auxiliary functions in your timer, press the MODE key until the LCD screen says:

This Tach Adapter allows users to connect a tachometer, shift light, or RPM activated switch to their distributorless ignition system. The unit senses the current going through the positive coil source wire, then converts that information into a 12-volt square wave signal that can be read by Auto Meter tachometers and accessories. The tach adapter is compact and completely potted with polyurethane for vibration andwater protection.

Using the latest in microprocessor technology, the MF-2 can be used as a non-contact or a contact tachometer simply by adding or removing the supplied slide-in adapter. It measures RPM from 1 to 99,999 as well as FPM, mPM and IPM. It can ... measure the length of moving surfaces in feet, meters or inches. In the non-contact mode, RPM is measured by means of a visible beam of light. The meter can be held up to 24" away from a small piece of reflective tape attached to the rotating part. In the contact mode, one of the contact adapters is held against the rotating element.
