Taboo
built 635 days ago
Taboo's powers are the result of a vampiric symbiote being bonded to her. The symbiote can manifest itself as a bio-metallic suit. When the suit manifests, it drains Amanda of small amounts of her blood to power itself, giving her a pale-white complexion. It ... gives her green eyeballs with no visible pupils. The suit has claws and a tail attached to it, all fully functional. The suit can adapt to its environment; it can grow wings to fly or a fish-tail and gills to move and breath underwater.
home A Gaduga (Ga-too-ga), "Taboo," was a very powerful restriction. The gaduga could be evoked for a number of reasons. It could be a personal thing, or it could be determined by an adawehi. Most taboos came from the interpretation of a dream or by customs. If a warrior or woman felt they were under some form of a gaduga, it behooved them not to do anything to break the injunction placed upon them. To do so was to invite disaster upon themselves and all concerned, for the Spirit between a person and their gaduga was all powerful and absolute.
Taboo has a dreamlike quality that sets an eerie bluish mood and makes the characters glow with a haunting feeling of the afterworld. Its tale is focused on a new recruit to the Shinsen militia, who seeks to become a samurai warrior. He's an effeminate and beautiful 18-year-old, a rich merchant's son named Sozaburo Kano (Ryuhei Matsuda). The militia he joins puts down insurrections, maintains order among the clans, and protects the shogun. At the same time he joins, another recruit -- Hyozo Tashiro (Tadanobu Asano) -- a commoner, who ... becomes a samurai. They are selected by Commander Isami Kondo (Yoichi Sai) and his Lieutenant Commander, Captain Toshizo Hijikata (Takeshi Kitano).

Taboo In their quest to clear Amanda's name, Taboo met Lilitu, a female vampire who knew about her symbiote's origins; eons ago the sire of her race, Calobis was allied with the Daemonite Helspont. Helspont would cure Calobis and his people of vampirism and in return Calobis provided host bodies to the Daemonites. Helspont failed, but used tissue samples of Calobis to a suit to hold his power. When Lilitu tried to resurrect Calobis from the suit though, Calobis appeared and told her that there were two suits. The ritual had a side-effect though and awoke a vampiric side inside the symbiote. From now on, the symbiote would take control at times.
Taboo strikes the wrong note from the word go, opening with the bizarre game. The dialogue has a forced, stagy quality to it; these people are talking in such a way that no real person ever would. It's the sort of problem that plagues a lot of films based on plays, but since Taboo is an original screenplay, that's clearly not an issue here. Screenwriter Chris Fisher is either incredibly untalented or he wrote the script over a weekend, because either way, the final product comes off as shoddy and rushed. The whole production feels as though it were assembled out of necessity; the actors spend most of their time wandering around, waiting for their next line. Even the direction is perfunctory - you can almost see director Max Makowski's thought process ("one of the characters is running… I'd better break out the shaky cam!")

Taboo could be sanctioned by social use or instinct. The violation of a taboo made the offender taboo; taboos, like various kinds of social uncleanliness, were transmissible, but the taboo could be thrown off by magical or purificatory ceremonies. It might last for a short period, or be imposed for eternity.
