In the summer of 1998, System of a Down released their debut album, System of a Down. They enjoyed moderate success with their first single "Sugar" becoming a radio favorite, followed by the single "Spiders". After the release of the album, System of a Down toured extensively, opening for Slayer before making their way to the second stage of Ozzfest. Following Ozzfest, they toured with Fear Factory and Incubus before headlining the Sno-Core tour with Puya, Mr. Bungle, The Cat and Incubus providing support. System was scheduled to play the 1999 Family Values Tour, but were kicked off by Fred Durst over his inability to sign the band Taproot. Fred Durst has since admitted that he was a "complete wanker" in relation to this "oversight"

Adjectives like "ambitious," "jagged," and "startling" have always defined System of a Down, and their third official full-length is no different. Prerelease, the band described Mezmerize as being the first part -- the first side -- of what's essentially a double album. Although it's often lumped in with lunkheaded n�-metal bands like Limp Bizkit, System of a Down makes some of the smartest music in mainstream rock. The LA-based quartet's complex instrumentation and innovative production techniques produce a provocative fusion of punk, prog, and indie rock. The driving force behind System's style is guitarist and songwriter Daron Malakian, a gearhound whose hobbies include studying sound design and engineering guitar hacks. On their official web site, System of a Down say, "We don't consider any of these songs B-sides or outtakes. The songs that didn't make it onto Toxicity are as good as, if not better than the songs that did." Indeed, the band do give these songs the full album treatment, even going as far as employing Andy Wallace to add his trademark polish to the mix. The result is a CD that sounds fantastic, but despite the blistering, aggressive production, the weaker moments on Steal This Album! are still glaringly obvious.

System of a Down came to be in the mid-90’s in southern California. The foursome, made up of 4 Armenian musicians bent on making a sound and genre that no band had done before, built a large fan base in the Los Angeles metal scene. Surprisingly enough, at the time of their signing a contract with American/Columbia, they only had a three song demo circulating the globe and the best form of marketing, word of mouth from all their loyal fans.

System was scheduled to engage in recreation the 1999 Family Principles Tour, but were kicked rotten by Fred Durst over his inability to sign the band Taproot.
