Syria: Wars

Within this context, Sharon's decision to attack Syria appears designed to shine the spotlight once again on Syria as a key target in the war on terrorism. Coming at a time when the neo-cons in Washington are on the defensive over their pre-war claims about the dangers posed by Hussein in Iraq and the welcome which U.S. troops were supposed to have been accorded by the Iraqi population, the renewed focus on Syria conveniently changes the subject.

This appears to be yet another "bash Syria" move to make it more acceptable to the US public for Israel to launch another war of aggression against Syria, when they think the timing is right. - M. R.

Syria continues to exercise great influence in Lebanon. Syria and its allies are believed responsible for a series of assassinations to undermine Lebanese democracy that have eliminated anti-Syrian members of the Lebanese parliament, the most recent attack coming in September 2007. Syria supplied Hezbollah with weapons used in the war fought with Israel in July 2006 and has been resupplying the organization in defiance of the UN since the war ended..

It looks like, having failed to muster support for a direct attack on Iran, Bush will try to kick off the war by going through Syria. This is not unlike how Franklin Delano Roosevelt was able to get the US into the war against Germany by provoking Japan into the attack on Pearl Harbor. Japan and Germany had a mutual defense pact that dragged Germany into the war between the US and Japan, and likewise Iran and Syria have a mutual defense pact that will drag Iran into a US attack on Syria. - M. R.

[W]ars don't respect national borders, and it's only a matter of time before the Americans' ongoing battle against the Iraqi insurgency spills over into Syria. As I predicted in September 2003, "We are a border incident away from taking the war into Syria, and beyond," and that analysis seems borne out by events.

Spain ... provided some soothing balm for Syria. Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar, despite being an ally of the US in its war against Iraq, said that “Spain will remain a friend of Spain and will not be the target of any military action.”
