Syria ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child in June 1993, and is violating its provisions systematically. The denial of Syrian nationality to Kurdish children born in Syria is a blatant case of discrimination based on ethnicity, in violation of the Convention, which provides guarantees to every child to the right to be registered and the right to acquire a nationality. Kurdish children born in Syria -- some of them classified as "foreigners," and others as maktoumeen -- are singled out solely because of their status as members of the Kurdish ethnic minority.

Syria has begun its own investigation into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, after lambasting a U.N. inquiry which found evidence that Syrian officials were involved in the killing, according to a report from Syria's state-run news agency.

There is more news today on the mysterious goings-on at what is thought to be the site in Syria hit last month by a surprise Israeli airstrike. Earlier this week, David Albright, a former weapons inspector for the United Nations who heads the Institute for Science and International Security, identified on prebombing satellite images what may have been Israel's target: an apparent secret Syrian nuclear reactor under construction.

Despite the difficult circumstances faced by internet users in Syria these have not stopped the spread of blogging. A few Syrian online blogs have appeared during the last few years. In the beginning of 2005, there were only five Syrian online blogs, which increased to 35 blogs by the beginning of 2006. Ayman Hikal of http://www.damasceneblog.com blog founded the Syrian bloggers' Association with the purpose to gather bloggers in an unofficial assembly. Ayman believes that the limited number of Syrian bloggers is due to the fear of the states reaction to any perceived criticism. Arab holdout Syria has agreed to attend the conference that hopes to restart talks to resolve the six-decade conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The White House says the goal is to eventually set up an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel.

At one time Islam was the state religion, and though it is still recognized as the religion of themajority, Syria is now a secular state with no official religion. The Christian minority is tolerated and has freedom to worship and witness.
