Syria had no chance to answer the British chareges at the meeting of the U.N. Security Council's Iraqi Sanctions Committee. Norway's U.N. Ambassador Ole Peter Kolby, the committee chairman, said Syria was unable to respond because debate opened late Monday. He postponed further discussion until the committee next meets, but no date for that has been set.

In accordance with Syria's interpretation of Shari'a inheritance laws, daughters are entitled to half the inheritance of sons. Yet, many Syrian women are not aware of their inheritance rights and may turn over their lawfully inherited property to another relative. Furthermore, male descendants from a different line of the family may be able to compete with female descendants of the deceased if the deceased has no male heirs. Non-Muslim women do not have the right to inherit from their Muslim husbands.

The prime minister enumerated a five-point Israeli-wish list and demanded that the international community must ensure that Syria complies with them. His demands included the dismantling of Palestinian resistance organisations like Hamas within Syrian territory and an end to continued Syrian cooperation with Iran.
