In addition to the network expansion in greater Syracuse, Cingular is adding new cell sites in the Albany, Binghamton, Elmira, Buffalo and Rochester areas. As a result of its merger with AT&T Wireless, Cingular customers now enjoy the benefit of 780 fully-integrated cell sites throughout upstate New York.

The first settlers in the Syracuse area were a group of French Jesuits, soldiers, and furriers who arrived sometime in 1656 to set up a mission. At the invitation of the Onondaga Nation, the French established the Ste. Marie de Gannentaha mission on the northeast shore of Onondaga Lake. The mission lasted less than two years... due to intimations from the neighboring Mohawk Nation that the French visitors would suffer a horrible fate if they remained among the Onondaga. The settlers abandoned the mission in the middle of a cold, March night in 1658.

Syracuse today has about 125,000 inhabitants and numerous attractions for the visitor interested in historical sites (such as the Ear of Dionysius). The Syracuse women's lacrosse team started the 2008 campaign in record-setting fashion with a 24-3 win against Canisius in front of 568 in the Carrier Dome on Wednesday, February 20. The Orange set single-game records for most goals scored and largest margin of victory. The win is the first for the Orange under the direction of head coach Gary Gait.

The city of Syracuse is located at the SE corner of Sicily and included the offshore island of Ortygia. Ortygia, which forms the N arm of the natural harbor at Syracuse, was a naturally defensible site with a source of fresh water. It was the position first occupied by the Greek colonists who fortified it, laid out a linear grid pattern of streets, and constructed their earliest sanctuaries, including temples of Athena and Apollo. The narrow island remained a citadel of the city even after it was joined to the mainland at ca. 550 B.C.
