Macquarie's tenure as Governor of New South Wales was a period when Sydney was improved from its basic beginnings. Roads, bridges, wharves and public buildings were constructed by British and Irish convicts, and by 1822 the town had banks, markets, well-established thoroughfares and an organised constabulary. The 1830s and 1840s were periods of urban development, including the development of the first suburbs, as the town grew rapidly when ships began arriving from Britain and Ireland with immigrants looking to start a new life in a new country. On 20 July 1842 the municipal council of Sydney was incorporated and the town was declared the first city in Australia, with Charles H. Chambers the first mayor.[9] The first of several gold rushes started in 1851, and the port of Sydney has since seen many waves of people arriving from around the world. Rapid suburban development began in the last quarter of the 19th century with the advent of steam powered tramways and railways. With industrialisation Sydney expanded rapidly, and by the early 20th century it had a population well in excess of one million.

Cityrail, Sydney's rail metropolitan rail network was planned in 1926, and half built by 1950. Construction appears to have stopped at that point. well they claim to. In fact it has been said that if a terrorist attack occured on Sydney's trains, that they wouldn't achieve much as the train would be delayed by signal failure and the subsequent explosion would actually help to clean up the non-working rail carriages littered around the network. Sydney trains are so out of date that the "Next Stop" and "Doors Closing" messages are not pre recorded but spoken by the train drivers themselves. This is particuarly hazardous because the drivers appear to talk in another language so that "Doors Closing" sounds more like "Vrogs M-Lown" (except with hardly any pronunciation skills what so ever).

John Howard, a reason why people hate and fear Sydney even more. Although the national capital is supposedly Canberra, he spends the majority of his time in Sydney, owing to the distinctive presence of people. He can usually be seen surveying his grand kingdom from his residence of Kirribilli house, on a specially constructed platform which is made to cater for his lack of height. A character to be avoided at ALL costs.

You can have a close hand look while you are in Sydney by visiting the South Eastern Pylon. It is a walking trip and recommended for the fit only. It is a longish walk to get to the base of the Pylon and then there are 200 steps to the top. Entry for adults is now $8.50 (23 June 2003), kids between 8 and 12 years three dollars and under 8 years its free. (Prices valid until 30 November 2003).
