Sydney was the first settlement in the Penile Colony of New South Wales. In 1788, 12 ships arrived and made precisely the same error that Captain Cook did in 1770, but rather than rush back to England the colonists decided to turn the colony into the world's biggest gaol, making the Dutch, and the French, jolly angry.

Sydney has five large and many smaller museums. The biggest are the Australian Museum (natural history and anthropology), the Powerhouse Museum (science, technology and design), the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Australian National Maritime Museum.

The club, originally founded in 1874, was known as the South Melbourne Football Club until it relocated to Sydney in 1982 to become the Sydney Swans. Sydney is the only AFL club based in New South Wales, and was ... the first non-Victorian club in the competition.
