Switch: Positions
built 644 days ago
The picture shows a 6-pole double throw switch... known as a 6-pole changeover switch. It can be set to have momentary or latching action. Latching action means it behaves as a push-push switch, push once for the first position, push again for the second position etc.

In the following demo, you can open and close the switch. For the normal connection, the internal lamp (could be an LED) lights only when the external lamp is powered (when the switch is closed). For the alternate connection, the internal lamp is always powered. The external lamp is lit when the rocker switch is in the closed position.

A biased switch is one containing a spring that returns the actuator to a certain position. The "on-off" notation can be modified by placing parentheses around all positions other than the resting position. For example, an (on)-off-(on) switch can be switched on by moving the actuator in either direction away from the centre, but returns to the central off position when the actuator is released.
