The first RF MEMS devices to be introduced by RFMD will be an RF MEMS transmit/receive switch and an RF MEMS mode-switch for 3G multimode handsets. RFMD's MEMS switch technology will help accelerate 3G deployment by significantly reducing the product footprint and improving efficiency, thereby extending handset talk time. When combined with RFMD's industry-leading process technologies for front-end solutions (GaAs, SOI and silicon), RFMD's RF MEMS switch technology will set new standards for low-cost, small size, and very high performance front ends.

The term "carrier-class" is associated with the Nortel CS 2100 switch due to its ability to provide fully redundant support of a large number of end users and applications, similar to the switches that reside in telecommunications carrier networks. The Nortel CS 2100 solution for Georgia Tech includes a geographically split core design. If a portion of the switch fails, the other half will maintain uninterrupted service to Georgia Tech's campus. The switch is managed and maintained by dedicated BellSouth technicians.

In the past, it was faster to use Layer 2 techniques to switch, when only MAC addresses could be looked up in content addressable memory (CAM). With the advent of ternary CAM (TCAM), it was equally fast to look up an IP address or a MAC address. TCAM is expensive, but very appropriate for enterprise switches that use default routes plus a moderate number of other routes. For routers that need a full Internet routing table, TCAM may not be cost-effective.

For additional business continuity, the switch connects directly to BellSouth's self-healing, fully redundant fiber ring architecture, known as SONET. This SONET ring consists of two diverse paths of fiber that connect both distributed switch core locations on the Georgia Tech campus to each other and the BellSouth network. If one fiber path is cut, the signal will travel over the second fiber route. If both fiber paths are cut, the signal reverses and travels around the remaining arc of the loop.
