Swimming: Olympic Games
built 203 days ago
Swimming has been a sport at every modern Summer Olympics. It has been open to women since 1912. Along with track & field athletics it is one of the most popular spectator sports at the Games and one with the biggest number of events.
Ian Thorpe is the twenty-first century's swimming icon and is one of the most recognised sportspeople of the world. At 21 years of age Thorpe was the world record holder for the 200 metres, 400 metres, and 800 metres freestyle. As of winter 2003, he had broken 22 world records and won three Olympic Gold medals. He has ... won several other awards, including the 2002 American International Athlete Trophy - 'Worlds Most Outstanding Athlete'.
If Emily Silver fulfills her lifetime dream of swimming in the Olympic Games this summer, she'll join some very distinct and rare company in the process. Over the years, sons and daughters have followed mothers and fathers as Olympians and brothers and sisters have kept the family lineage alive by competing – sometimes together – in the Olympics. Silver, a senior at the University of California Berkeley, can create her own unique version of this rare anomaly by making the Beijing Olympic team 40 years after her uncle, Larry Barbiere, competed for the United States in Mexico City.

"We're excited that our technology assets and expertise can help swimming fans stay plugged in as the path to Beijing unfolds in the coming year," said Jason Simpson, director of Olympic Integration, AT&T. "This is a key step for AT&T as we strengthen our niche in delivering exclusive coverage of U.S. Olympic Team hopefuls to consumers throughout the country."
Programming for swimming finals was among the most controversial scheduling issues at the Beijing Olympics, with US rights holder NBC pushing for early finals to coincide with peak evening viewing hours in the United States. NBC did not get its way in athletics, finals for which will be staged in the late evening.
The Australian national swimming team is called the Telstra Dolphins. Its members take part in national and international meets throughout the year and train towards major events such the World Titles, Pan Pacific Championships, Commonwealth Games and Olympic Games.
