The Sweetheart of Sigma Chi is the ideal of Christian Brotherhood as it is supposed to be represented in the Fraternity, and the word 'Sweetheart' is used symbolically. It does not refer to any actual sweetheart in the earthly sense, else there would be no meaning to the line 'each sweet co-ed like a rainbow trail fades in the afterglow.'

Pookie Hudson, lead singer of the Spaniels doo-wop group best known for its 1954 hit “Goodnight, Sweetheart, Goodnight,” died Tuesday at his home in Capitol Heights, Md., from complications related to mestastic lung cancer. He is survived by his wife, Delores, and several children.

Sweetheart is so named because she arrived at Shambala on Valentine's Day, 1995. Born in August, 1994, she lost her original home due to her owners' divorce. Idaho Fish and Game placed her temporarily at the Boise Zoo, and from there she came to Shambala. All four paws had been declawed, and the job had been done so badly that it had to be done over again. But thanks to the treatment of veterinarian Dr. Jon Bernstein and the care she has received at Shambala, Sweetheart is a fine, healthy and happy lady.

In addition to the three lost Parsons vocals already mentioned, The Byrds Boxed Set contained three never-before heard outtakes from Sweetheart (all of which are appended to the 1997 reissue). All three songs were removed by producer Gary Usher. The best of these is a cover of Tim Hardin's "You Got A Reputation," a languid folk-blues number with some nice bluesy fake-steel licks from Clarence White. Parsons and Hillman share vocals. The song would be one of very few attempts at blues-based material by any version of the band.

The original intention was to house “Sweetheart” in one of the newly established crocodile farms where it would be part of the breeding program but upon its death it was presented to the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory. The crocodile was mounted and a full articulated skeleton prepared. Sweetheart is now a permanent exhibition at the Museum & Art Gallery of the Northern Territory.
