Legend has it that Sweetest Day was established around 1922 by Herbert Birch Kingston, a Cleveland, Ohio, candy company employee who wanted to bring happiness to the lives of those who often were forgotten. Kingston and others distributed candy and small gifts to orphans, shut-ins and others to show them someone cared.

The first Sweetest Day came out of one man's desire to do something "sweet" for Cleveland's orphans and unfortunate residents. With the help of movie stars, Theda Bara and Ann Pennington, Herbert Birch Kingston, delivered thousands of boxes of candy throughout the city. Begun in 1922, the holiday, observed on the third Saturday of each month, became popular during the bleak economic times of the Great Depression.

Gift Tree is close: "Traditionally observed on the 3rd Saturday of October, Sweetest Day was started in an effort to bring happiness into the lives of others. This year, celebrate Sweetest Day with your loved ones and friends by sending them a gift basket full of sweets or chocolates from GiftTree." Somewhat Spun!

Sweetest Day is an original American holiday, a 20th century creation like Mother's Day and Father's Day. Many think that, like Mother's Day and Father's Day, it was created by the Hallmark corporation to increase greeting card sales. But it turns out that's not the case. It was created to spread cheer -- and to sell candy, not cards.
