Sweeney Todd: Johnny Depp
built 117 days ago
As the story begins, Sweeney Todd (Johnny Depp) is returning to London from Australia, where he was unjustly imprisoned by Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman), who had designs on the barber's wife. The wife poisoned herself after the judge raped her, and now Turpin has designs on Todd's 16-year-old daughter Johanna (newcomer Jayne Wisener in an exceptional debut musically), who's just as beautiful as her mother.

In the scene where Sweeney Todd and Mrs. Lovett are dancing in her storefront (after they finalize their plan of what to do with the bodies), Depp is holding a butcher's cleaver in one hand. In the wide shots of them dancing, the cleaver is noticeably lower than in the close ups, where the cleaver appears to be at the level of Mrs. Lovett's shoulder.

"Sweeney Todd" will mark Richard Zanuck's third collaboration with DreamWorks, having produced "Deep Impact" and "Road to Perdition" for the studio. The film will ... mark Zanuck's reunion with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with whom he produced last year's international hit "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Among his many films, Zanuck won a Best Picture Oscar as a producer for "Driving Miss Daisy" and has received the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for consistently producing high quality motion pictures.

On Monday, Dec. 3, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street premiered at the Ziegfeld Theater. The film, which opens on Dec. 21, is a gloriously dark marriage of Tim Burton imagery and Stephen Sondheim music that those in the know are declaring to be the film of the year. Star Johnny Depp was there, distinguished-looking in glasses, a smart suit and bright red tie, as well as Mr. Burton and Mr. Sondheim, co-stars Alan Rickman and Sacha Baron Cohen, and even—hey now!—Keith Richards.
