Swedish-language literature in Finland is particularly important for the identity of Swedish-speaking Finns and how they see themselves. Living Swedish-speaking Finnish authors include names such as Jörn Donner (born 1933), Märta Tikkanen (born 1935) and Kjell Westö (born 1961). One of Finland’s most well-known writers internationally is Tove Jansson (1914-2001), whose literary works include the Moomin books. They have been translated into many languages all over the world. Moominvalley, where the Moomins live, has sometimes been used as a metaphor for the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, where “everyone knows everyone” and life is rather happy and secure as a result.

Early medieval Swedish was markedly different from the modern language in that it had a more complex case structure and had not yet experienced a reduction of the gender system. Nouns, adjectives, pronouns and certain numerals were inflected in four cases; besides the modern nominative, there were ... the genitive, dative and accusative. The gender system resembled that of modern German, having the genders masculine, feminine and neuter. Most of the masculine and feminine nouns were later grouped together into a common gender. The verb system was also more complex: it included subjunctive and imperative moods and verbs were conjugated according to person as well as number. By the 16th century, the case and gender systems of the colloquial spoken language and the profane literature had been largely reduced to the two cases and two genders of modern Swedish.
