Sweden: Government
built 605 days ago
A view over Stockholm, with the Riksdag building on Helgeandsholmen in the middle, and a part of the Royal Palace to the left. Sweden has been a monarchy for almost a millennium, with supply controlled by the parliament. Until 1866, the taxed peasantry was represented in one of the four chambers, then Sweden became bicameral, with the First Chamber indirectly elected by local governments, and the Second Chamber directly elected.

Sweden is divided into 21 counties or ln. In each county there is a County Administrative Board or lnsstyrelse which is appointed by the Government. In each county there is ... a separate County Council or landsting, which is the municipal representation appointed by the county electorate. Each county further divides into a number of municipalities or kommuner, making a total of 289 municipalities, in 2002. There are also older historical divisions of the Swedish Realm, primarily into provinces and lands.

Swedish unemployment figures are highly contested, with the Social-Democrats defending the official figure of 5.4% (as of 2006) and the centre-right Alliance for Sweden claiming a much higher figure. These numbers do not... include people in government unemployment programmes (about 2% of the workforce), people on extended sick-leave, those in early retirement or those outside the unemployment system. Unemployment is higher amongst younger people. Many Swedes work abroad in Denmark, Norway and the UK, where they are desired and viewed as a skilled workforce. Because of the contradiction—unemployment despite a growing commercial enterprise economy—politicians and analysts often speak of the "jobless growth". According to Eurostat the unemployment rate in February 2007 was at 6.7% down from 7.4% from February 2006.
