During the late nineteenth century, Sweden was influenced by Protestant temperance movements, to a significant extent mentored by the Prohibitionist movement in the United States, where many Swedes had relatives. As a result of their intense propaganda, it was often claimed that alcohol consumption was unusually high in Sweden at that time. However, no empirical basis exists for believing that alcohol consumption was higher in Sweden than in other Scandinavian countries. A proposal for prohibition in Sweden was defeated in a 1921 referendum; the result was possibly influenced by an advertising campaign, begun a few weeks before the vote, emphasizing the undesirability of having to eat crawfish (an almost universally popular dish among Swedes) without snaps. Abstinence or considerable moderation with regard to alcohol is not unusual among Swedes, possibly the christianized West's only nationality in which teetotalism is more prevalent than regular church attendance.

All industry and agriculture in Sweden is located in places around the country. The economical, political and medial power is ... located in Stockholm. This creates a perfect symbiosis. The outlines of this were sketched by Per Albin Hansson in the 1930's and have later been proven by the professor of sociology Nils Ängelby to be consistent with the best way of life, so long as it pays his salary.
Sweden possesses a long tradition of success in science, engineering and invention. The country is home to the Nobel Prize, named after scientist Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. Uppsala University, which dates back to 1477 and is Scandinavia's oldest center of learning, has a centuries-long tradition as a home of scientific research and Swedish culture. Carolus Linnaeus developed a scientific classification of plants and animals while at Uppsala. Eight Nobel laureates have been connected to Uppsala University, which offers faculties in humanities and social sciences, medicine and pharmacology, and science and technology.
Sweden has high taxes and strong trade unions. Despite recently electing a new government, is still a country where socialism is strong. Fredrik Reinfeldt says that he is not going to destroy the Swedish model - in fact he says he likes that model - he only wants make some small changes. Although one of the parties in the government alliance is named "The Christian Democrats", no decisions have been made to make Christianity stronger in Sweden.
Sweden, which occupies the eastern part of the Scandinavian Peninsula, is the fourth-largest country in Europe and is one-tenth larger than California. The country slopes eastward and southward from the Kjólen Mountains along the Norwegian border, where the peak elevation is Kebnekaise at 6,965 ft (2,123 m) in Lapland. In the north are mountains and many lakes. To the south and east are central lowlands and south of them are fertile areas of forest, valley, and plain. Along Sweden's rocky coast, chopped up by bays and inlets, are many islands, the largest of which are Gotland and Öland.

noframe Although having been a military power and spanning about three times its current size during the 17th century, Sweden has not participated in any war in almost two centuries. Having long remaining outside military alliances (including both World Wars), the country has a high peace profile, with internationally renowned names such as Raoul Wallenberg, Dag Hammarskjöld, Olof Palme and Hans Blix. Sweden is a monarchy by constitution, but king Carl XVI Gustaf has no executive power. The country has a long tradition of Lutheran-Protestant Christianity, but today's Sweden is a secular state with few church-goers.
