It is one of the Swazi rituals that attractcs most tourists into the kingdom. The Incwala Ceremony is held in December or January on a date chosen by the astrologers in conjunction with the phases of the moon.

In the early years of colonial rule, the British had expected that Swaziland would eventually be incorporated into South Africa. After World War II... South Africa's intensification of racial discrimination induced the United Kingdom to prepare Swaziland for independence. Political activity intensified in the early 1960s. Several political parties were formed and jostled for independence and economic development. The largely urban parties had few ties to the rural areas, where the majority of Swazis lived. The traditional Swazi leaders, including King Sobhuza II and his Inner Council, formed the Imbokodvo National Movement (INM), a political group that capitalized on its close identification with the Swazi way of life.

A modern Swazi anthropologist, Arthur Mngomezulu, says ways of subsistence farming have not changed as Swaziland's 1902 population of 85,000 grew more than tenfold to nearly one million in 2002. The lack of a population policy to control demand on the nation's resources, and the persistence of peasant farming that requires large families to manually work the land, has resulted in the current food crisis, analysts argue.

Condoms have been widely available in Swaziland since the 1990s. The government and other agencies made over one million male condoms available in 2000, and by 2004 this number had grown to over 6 million. Female condoms have ... been distributed, but much less widely- fewer than 20,000 were supplied in 2004. Free condoms have also been made available at key locations in and around border posts designed to target some of the most at risk groups such as migrant workers, truck drivers and female sex workers.17 The government plans to make 10 million male condoms and 80 thousand female condoms available by 2008.
