Swaziland’s labor force is split between two dominant sectors, agriculture and services. Some 26 percent of its workforce engaged in crop or livestock production, while another 48 percent hold service jobs. The country's economy is tied to that of South Africa through trade and currency links, and can rise or fall depending on the fortunes of its large neighbor. Gross domestic product in 2005 was $2.7 billion, or an average of $2,414.20 per person.

Swaziland has well-developed road links with South Africa. It ... has railroads running east to west and north to south. The older east-west link, called the Goba line, makes it possible to export bulk goods from Swaziland through the Port of Maputo in Mozambique. Until recently, most of Swaziland's imports were shipped through this port. Conflict in Mozambique in the 1980s diverted many Swazi exports to ports in South Africa. A north-south rail link, completed in 1986, provides a connection between the Eastern Transvaal (now Mpumalanga) rail network and the South African ports of Richards Bay and Durban.
The Kingdom of Swaziland is a small, landlocked country in Southern Africa (one of the smallest on the continent), embedded between South Africa in the west, north and south and Mozambique in the east. The country is named after the Swazi, a Bantu tribe. It is divided into four regional administrative districts: Hhohho, Manizini, Lubomobo and Shiselweni. Regions are further subdivided into Tinkhundla administrated by chieftains.

MDGR Swaziland is a low middle-income country with a per capita income of about U$1350, over twice the Sub-Saharan African average. However, the proportion of the population living below the poverty line is 69% (of which 63% are females and 37% males) and these are subsisting on less than E128.6 (US$ 24) per capita per month in 2004. This shows the extreme poverty prevailing in the country. Poverty indices ... show that women are the worst affected in Swaziland and as such, female-headed homes account for the highest number of poverty stricken families.
