The official languages of Swaziland are siSwati, a Bantu language, and English, in which most government business is conducted. For the first time, Swaziland may be forced to seek relief from the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) said Noah Nkambule, the principal secretary for the ministry of agriculture. WFP is planning an assessment mission to determine the number of people in need, while the National Disaster Relief Task Force expects to import 300,000 mt of grain this year - a record - to stave-off starvation.

Graffiti on rock: A prayer alone won't stop HIV' The enormous stigma associated with HIV and AIDS in Swaziland prevents many Swazis from being tested for HIV or declaring their HIV status if they are positive. The government estimates that only 20% of people in the country know their HIV status. Swazi traditional opinion links AIDS with sexual promiscuity, and often causes HIV positive people to be rejected by their families.32 It is believed that many people in the country do not want to know their HIV status, and those who do know will often keep it a secret, some even from their sexual partners.

The greatest single problem confronting the people of Swaziland is the HIV/AIDS pandemic. As of 2005, the infection rate of adults (ages 15 to 49) was 42.6 percent, giving Swaziland the highest HIV rate in the world. In addition, approximately 70,000 children have been orphaned as a result of AIDS.
