Svetlana Savitskaya becomes the first woman to do a space walk. With her partner, Vladimir Dzhanibekov, she conducts welding experiments for over three hours outside the Soviet space station Salyut 7. Savitskaya had become the second woman to fly in space during a Soviet mission in 1982.
Nineteen years after Valentina Tereshkova's historic flight, Russian cosmonaut Svetlana Savitskaya became the second woman in space in August 1982. In July 1984, Savitskaya became the first woman to perform a spacewalk.

Photograph of Svetlana Savitskaya Svetlana Savitskaya was born in Moscow on August 8, 1948. The daughter of Yeveniy Savitsky, the Deputy Commander of the Soviet Air Defenses and twice a Hero of the Soviet Union, she lived a life of relative privilege. She began parachuting (without her parents' permission) at age sixteen; once her father discovered her new interest he encouraged her and she completed 450 jumps by her seventeenth birthday. At eighteen she enrolled in the best Soviet aviation engineering school, the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) while ... taking pilot lessons. By the time she was twenty she was making solo flights.
Svetlana Savitskaya was born on August 8, 1948, in Moscow. She was interested in flight from a very young age. As a school girl, she managed, for a time, to hide from her father her parachute jumping activities.

The eighth print captures a milestone on Dzhanibekov's earlier Soyuz T-12 mission to Salyut 7: the first EVA by a woman, namely Svetlana Savitskaya. The art depicts Savitskaya working on a welding experiment outside the station, set against the curvature of the Earth below.
After graduation in 1972, Svetlana pursued a career as a pilot. She set world records in supersonic and turbo-prop aircraft. Svetlana set the record as the first female to fly 2,683 km/hr in a MiG-21. By 1972, she was licensed to fly an amazing 20 different types of aircraft.
