Pleshette began her career as a stage actress. She made her Broadway debut in Meyer Levin's 1957 play Compulsion, adapted from his novel inspired by the Leopold and Loeb case. Two years later she was featured in the comedy Golden Fleecing starring Tom Poston, who eventually would become her third husband. In February 1961, she replaced Anne Bancroft opposite 14-year-old Patty Duke in The Miracle Worker to rave reviews.[8]

Pleshette became a widow last year when her husband, comic actor Tom Poston, died after a brief illness. The pair married in 2001, more than 40 years after they had first met on Broadway in 1959.

As it turned out, Pleshette took away more than a fantastic memory. In 2000, she married one of Newhart's costars, Tom Poston, who played inn handyman George Utley. They remained together until Poston himself died of respiratory failure in April of last year.

Pleshette retired from acting after marrying her second husband, wealthy businessman Tom Gallagher, in 1968. She told TV Guide in 1972 that after she'd been hanging around the house for six months, "my loving husband said, 'You're getting to be awfully boring. Go back to work.' "
