Suzanne Pleshette, the husky-voiced star the world knew for her role as Bob Newhart's sardonic wife on "The Bob Newhart Show," died Saturday of respiratory failure at her Los Angeles home. She was 70.
Suzanne Pleshette Poston, who was married to Suzanne Pleshette of "The Bob Newhart Show," died Monday night at home after a brief illness, a family representative, Tanner Gibson, said Tuesday. The nature of his illness was not disclosed.

From 1972 to 1978, Ms. Pleshette played a marital partner who was the equal of Newhart's psychologist Bob Hartley in every respect, including laugh lines. Her sexy, sophisticated, whiskey voice made Emily a perfect foil to the comedian's balding, hesitant, stammering spouse. The actress' portrayal marked a decided break from the television wives played by the likes of Donna Reed and Barbara Billingsley in the '50s and '60s. Ms. Pleshette was twice nominated for an Emmy Award for her work on the sitcom.

Pleshette's chance to break away from such stereotyping came when the producers of The Bob Newhart Show began looking for a sharp, outspoken, mature yet sexy woman to give The Bob Newhart Show a healthy adult TV marriage. Spotting Pleshette on The Tonight Show, they realized how perfect she was for the role. The show went on to break new ground by setting many key scenes in the Hartleys' king-size bed.
