Venerable British actress Susannah York and up-and-coming star Radha Mitchell head up the cast of this Australian psychological thriller. Both actresses play the character of Carolyn at different stages of her life; bookended with scenes of the elder Carolyn (York) recalling her attempt to sail around the world, the bulk of the film involves the terror-stricken voyage itself. Only in her twenties, the young Carolyn (Mitchell) is filled with hope and fear for her daring solo journey, but once at sea, isolation and solitude begin to take their toll. Soon, Carolyn is encountering people and situations from her past, sometimes with violent, terrifying consequences. Susannah York, who won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role, is "spellbinding" (Filmex) as a woman whose psychological demons are becoming quite real! As the film begins, wealthy housewife and children's author Cathryn (Susannah York) receives a series of disturbing and eerie phone calls in her home in London one dreary night. The female voice on the other end suggests mockingly to her that her husband Hugh (Rene Auberjonois) is having an affair. Her husband comes home, finding her in complete disarray. Hugh attempts to comfort her, but then he is gone, and she sees a different man who is behaving as if he were her husband. She screams in horror and backs away, only to see her vision of the figure revert back to her husband.

Cathryn (Susannah York) secludes herself in a remote country home, where she hopes to finish writing a children's book. But soon, she begins to feel a shift in her life. Reality quickly breaks down for Cathryn as the men in her life become more oppressive. Finally, a psychotic break finds her attempting to kill everyone -- although some may already be dead. Robert Altman directs from a script written by York herself.

Susannah York arrived in Hungary three days ago. She was invited by Szemző completely unexpectedly a few weeks ago. She first spoke to László Magács (director of the Merlin Theatre) on the phone and later with the director himself, and has made the final decision after having read the text itself. She was impressed by the zen that filtered through the text, the underlying poetic representation of the underworld- the transitory world and the afterlife, which immediately possessed her.

In 1960, York married Michael Wells, with whom she has two children, Orlando and Sasha. They divorced in 1976. In the 1984 TV adaptation of A Christmas Carol, she played Mrs. Cratchit and both of her children co-starred as Cratchit offspring. Her son, Orlando Wells, starred in the Channel 4 teen drama, As If. Wells gave York her first grandchild, Rafferty, in 2007.
