The first Susan B. Anthony Dollars were struck at ceremonies held at the Philadelphia Mint on December 13, 1978. Fearing hoarding by the public, the mint planned to hold release of the dollar until 500 million coins had been stockpiled. July 2, 1979 was selected as the official release date. On this date, ceremonies were held in Rochester, New York, home of Susan B. Anthony. Many celebrities were present at the ceremonies, including the then Director of the Mint Stella B. Hackel. The above first day of issue cover was signed and dated by Ms. Hackel at the release ceremonies.
In 1872 Susan B. Anthony and fifteen supporters from Rochester became the first women ever to vote in a presidential election. That they were promptly arrested for their boldness did not bother Anthony. She was eager to test women's legal right to vote under the Fourteenth Amendment by taking the case to the U.S. Supreme Court. Free on bail of one thousand dollars, Anthony campaigned throughout the country with a carefully prepared legal argument: "Is It a Crime for a U.S. Citizen to Vote?" She lost her case in 1873 in Rochester following some questionable rulings by the judge and was barred from appealing the result to the Supreme Court.
Susan B Anthony In 1979, Susan B. Anthony's image was chosen for the new dollar coin, making her the first woman to be depicted on US currency. The size of the dollar was... close to that of the quarter, and the Anthony dollar never became very popular. In 1999 the US government announced the replacement of the Susan B. Anthony dollar with one featuring the image of Sacagawea.
Susan B. Anthony Dollar Though it is round, The Susan B. Anthony dollar may appear 11-sided, due to an 11-sided rim bordering the edge of both sides. The original design called for the coin itself to be an 11-sided hendecagon, but vending machine manufacturers claimed that vending machined could only accommodate round coins. Because of their similar size and color, it was found to be very easy to mistake the coin for a quarter. The US dollar coin was released July 2, 1979. While a total of 847.5 million were minted in 1979, they failed to circulate well (despite the slogan "Carry three for Susan B.") and a minimal number were produced in 1980. In 1981 9.7 million coins were produced for numismatic sets marketed by the Mint.
