Susan B. Anthony was one of the strongest advocates of Women's rights in the mid-19th century, and is a representative figure of this politically oriented types of feminists politics. . IN 1872 she was arrested after casting an 'illegal' vote in the presidential election. She was fined $100 but refused to pay. She delivered this speech in 1873.

Susan B. Anthony was an early leader of the American women's suffrage (right to vote) movement and a pioneer in the struggle to gain equality for women. As an active abolitionist, or opponent of slavery, she campaigned for the freedom of slaves.

In 1872, Susan B. Anthony went to the polls and voted. She was arrested and convicted for this action, and was charged with voting illegally. However, she refused to pay the $100 fine. It was in 1888 that Susan helped organize the International Council of Women, a group that represented 48 different countries. She continued to be active in her cause and in her various organizations until her death on March 13, 1906.

Along with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony is, perhaps, the best known advocate of “Women’s Rights” in the 1800’s. For most of her adult life Susan gave herself unceasingly to the work of improving the circumstances of women in this nation. Not many realize that it was her religious heritage that led Susan to champion the cause for women’s rights in 19th century America.

Susan B. Anthony was convinced by her work for temperance that women needed the vote if they were to influence public affairs. She was introduced by Amelia Bloomer to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, one of the leaders of the women's rights movement, in 1851 and attended her first women's rights convention in Syracuse in 1852.

The birthplace of activist Susan B. Anthony, the town of Adams is located in Berkshire County in northwestern Massachusetts. It occupies 22 square miles (57 square kilometers) at the foot of Mount Greylock, on the Hoosic River, 15 miles (24 kilometers) north of Pittsfield. The town of North Adams is 5 miles (8 kilometers) to the north.
